Some of you may have read my previous post, in which I verbalized my distaste for Twilight. A lot of people wrote me angry responses, telling me (and basically everyone else who agrees with me) that I’m an idiot for not liking the book, and that I have no right to dislike Stephanie Meyer, etc. etc. etc.
This just strengthens my hatred.
I, of course, deleted these comments, as staring at them too long made me want to do something violent.
I have every right to hate whatever book and whatever author I want to. I’m not finding your blogs on Twilight and telling you you’re stupid. In the aforementioned post, I just said I hate when people think less of me for disliking the books, and that’s exactly what you’re doing. If you calmly and respectfully laid out your points on why you like the books (and Edward being FrEaKiNg HaWt doesn’t count), and stopped whining about how I’m close-minded, blah blah blah (which is funny, because you not being able to accept that I dislike something is being close-minded), I would be okay with that.
I like friendly debates. I think I’ve found one person who I can discuss Twilight with, because she doesn’t get upset that I hate it, and I don’t try and convince her to join me in my hatred.
Note: this is not a rant on why I hate Twilight AGAIN, because I honestly don’t care that much. This is a rant on why I hate people.
that is all.
[…] if you’ve read this and disagree, or whatever, go to this link. And leave me alone. Possibly related posts: (automatically generated)Paternaty Leave = […]
That is one thing we have in common: I like friendly debates (it’s nice to hear from someone who doesn’t like the books for once. I like them, but it’s not that interesting to keep talking about that to people who like them too)
And I too hate all people (both fans as haters) who just shout their own opinion when they have the chance. They don’t read what someone else has written, and if they do, they only react with some more shouting. They don’t really respond, and aren’t open for discussion. (Of course, not all people are like this, but there sure are many of them :p)
The only thing I would want you to know is this: don’t hate the book/ the writer even more just because there are a lot of people who can’t have normal discussions… If you were interested, I would explain why I do like them, but I understand if you don’t want to hear it π
Have you considered reading The Host? (I can name many reasons why that book is great, but I won’t, if you read it, you can form your own opinion)
Ha. Don’t like Twilight that much either. I read the first paragraph and it was kinda hilarious, very cliched.
Sure I got hooked, but then I was…blah. forgettable. Don’t feel like reading it.
It’s just me too not like things I feel are overrated.
Also, I hate Twilight, but I don’t like it when people are all like “Ugh. Twilight is bad because it sucks.”
Speaking of which, My friend and I wrote a parody of Edward Cullen, and the hard core fans, personally, went crazy. but everyone else thought it was funny.
Oh my gosh! FINALLY someone who hates Twilight too! I find the book very shallow and aggrivating. Bella is such a Mary Sue, I don’t know how she even got published. If I were to present that kind of work to my writing adviser, he’d laugh and tell me to fix my characters. I want to chuck the book everytime I read a paragraph about Bella. She’s just “so perfect” and no, being clumsy does not count as a character flaw!!! Everyone in that book is soooo perfect, it’s like no one can be flawed. People aren’t like that! Even in fantasy! Not to mention that it’s the most predictable storyplot I’ve ever read. I want to scream when people start saying that Stephanie Meyer is “so amazingly creative” when I can pratically predict the entire story’s plot before I even start one of her books. Bella is so selfish as well! And still, everyone LOVES her! “Pick me, Bella! Pick me! Please, Please, Please! You’re amazing! I love you, even though I don’t know why…” Urg. Annoying.
I feel as if anyone who likes the Twilight series is either shallow or insecure because they just picture themselves in Bella’s shoes and want to spend the next few hours pretending that the two most hottest guys in the world are fawning over them…so naive. So typcial of our society.
People these days…It makes me mad just to think of how shallow they are; Even some of my friends…
And I tried the Host. I hated it too.
No offense, Stephanie, but you’re not that good of a writer. Those actually in the field know that your work is very unprofessional and it hurts to think about how much attention you’re getting when there’s hundreds of authors out there that are better than you…Urg. You’re work is nothing better than that of Quizlla.
Hopefully, as time progresses, she’ll improve. I pray so. Because I want to bite my nails when people start proclaiming how much they love Twilight. All I see in it is naivity, and shallowness. What ever happened to deep and meaningful storylines???
And ha ha, that person that said that Twilight was better than Shakespeare on your other post…LOL!!! I can’t stop laughing! That is the funniest thing I have heard all day!!! Lol again! That is just ridiculous in every way!!!
I have been racking my brain to figure out why I like the Twilight series so much and yet have so many issues with it. Bella is a typical sullen teenager who falls in love at first sight. Sullen is overdone and love at first sight makes the author’s job easy because then they don’t have to show the couple getting to know each other and finding out what they have in common, etc. Edward’s only flaw (other than the fact that he is dead and drinks blood) is that he’s overprotective of Bella. Which to most people is a weak flaw, but it’s an annoying and disturbing flaw that I could never deal with in a significant other.
My favorite character is Jacob. He’s very much a real 16/17 year old boy who is immature and flawed and still wonderful. However, I’m not really sure why he and Bella are friends. Why he loves Bella like he does. Other than their penchant for risky adventures, what do they have in common?
So, yeah, I’ll be buying Breaking Dawn in August, ever curious as to how it all ends, but I agree with some of the above posts. I’d never thought of Bella as a mary sue, but i think that has merit. It’s not the most creative plot line, although I appreciate her changes to classic vampire lore (not bursting into flames in the sun, but looking like crystal). I also don’t really like the message of these books, which to me is all about romantic love and how that’s all that matters. No girl needs to depend on a guy the way Bella does. She barely has other friends than the Cullens. Teen girls do not need to be encouraged that having a guy is the end all be all of life.
Personally, I think there are narcotics in the words of Twilight and that’s why I keep reading them. π
Hmm… That’s really interesting. I haven’t read your first blog about it… But I’d like to know why you hate Twilight. I know that it can be corny and cheesy at times, but isn’t the point of books to let you escape? I’m not a big fan of reading stories about a hot vampire who rejects a normal girl. It’s not realistic, no, but that’s why it has vampires and werewolves in it- to reject normality.
Of course, Bella is extremely annoying, if you ask me. She’s dramatic and obsessive. She’s whiny, also. But otherwise, I love these books. Edward is, of course, the perfect guy [come one, everyone knows that being a bloodsucking vampire makes him hotter] and Jacob is the perfect 17 year-old boy that we all wanna be friends with.
While these books don’t have any real ‘meaning’ in them, they are fun to read. I mean, honestly, we all know that relationships can truly suck, so it’s fun to read about one that kinda works, and to dream that we’ll find the ‘love of our lives’ one day.
Twilight is a fun book to read. It doesn’t have a deep meaning or hidden philosophy. The girl is melodramatic and desperate. The guys are, naturally, not human and completely unrealistic. But these books have a light humor and fun about them that make me, at least, want to keep reading.
We don’t need depressive books when the world’s as bad as it is.
Sometimes, we all need to escape.
=]
I actually quite like the books, but I do agree that with your previous post about Bella and Edward just being … so unreal. That’s why I love Jacob. I feel like Stephenie’s the type of writer that you’ll either like or hate. There’s no in-between because her style’s just… non-descriptive and unnatural. But what can you expect, really, from a book about Vampires and Werewolves?
I really can’t pinpoint why I like the book. It just appeals to me. But Bella pisses me off, and Edward makes me want to smash his face in. Black’s the only character that’s normal, but those who bash your opinion, I bet are just immature teenage girls who only love the book because:
`1. Edward’s a Vampire. Have you seen how many people are obsessed with Vamps lately? If they’re a Vamp, it’s like they’re automatically hot.
`2. It’s a ROMANCE between a normal girl and a Vampire. It gives them, hope and feeds their fantasies.
`3. He’ll give up “anything and everything” for her. Supposedly, their love is timeless, or … WHATEVER. I guess it’s that life and death thing appeals to them and his “sweetness” makes them squeal. Ugh.
So honestly, their opinions don’t even count. They’re especially brainless if they go on about how “perfect” and “beautiful” Edward is. I don’t even know the point of this comment LOL, I just felt like commenting. Love your blog by the way π
i used to love twilight and all the chAaracters but over time i learned that the author wasnt as great as i thought. she was rly rude about her fans and she seemed to get cocky wit the movie coming out. after that i started seeing the book as rly dull…wen i thought bakc to the scences i jus got irratted wit some of the characters….
I cannot agree with you more about not really liking the book Twilight. I don’t hate the book completely. It’s just a book after all. But I do hate how these stupid teenage girls are obsessed with it like it’s the best thing since sliced bread. I am sick of going on Yahoo Answers in the Books and Authors section and reading about Twilight, Breaking Dawn Quotes and Edward Cullen and those stupid pieces of flairs on facebook. People don’t realize that Edward Cullen is a damn Vampire that is NOT REAL! And Bella seems like such a pussy. She’s a bad role model for girls everywhere. She claims to be a shy girl but she treats everyone except Edward Cullen like shit because they aren’t as handsome as Cullen is. And she lets Edward control her like she some sort of tool. If Edward told her to go fuck herself, Bella probably would (or at least try to). Now that’s not what girls these days should be getting out of this book. Girls need to be more independent and effin think for themselves. They don’t need a gorgeous vampire to determine their every move. And don’t say it’s love between the two. Bella only cares about the physical aspect of Edward and God knows what the hell Edward sees in Bella (other than that she’s a complete doormat that can be walked on). Meyer’s book is going to turn teenage girls more shallow than they already are because after all being helpless, clumsy and shallow is the way to get that gorgeous vampire. Yes that should be your entire life goal young girls: falling in love with a vegetarian vampire that watches you while you sleep and who drives a volvo. I am going to ROFL if Meyers reveals that Edward is gay in the end the way Rowling did with Dumbledore. Now that would be hilarious. And my own personal fantasy π
Thank god there are more of us. These books have done nothing but confuse and damage teens. Two girls in my neighbourhood broke up with nice guys to go after emo guys. The average teenager is not able to distinguish the good liturature from drivel. A friend’s daughter heard my most recent outburst on it and asked me, in er most imperious tone, what she should read. I gave her a list of the top 99 authors of the past 200 years. As a final point the 100th entry on the list was Clifford the big red dog. It has better plot development than Twilight.
>:)
I’m sorry for all those people who told you were an idiot, and blah blah blah. They can become crazy for a boring book for all I care.
The thing is, I really don’t understand why the books are so popular.
Does anybody still use Quizilla.com? Remember all the vampire romance stories with those clumsy heroines? They all resemble Meyer’s Twilight series. The books have no originality. Meyer’s “The Host” was okay though.
*sigh* And I’ve heard of people calling Meyers that next J.K. Rowling.
How can people say that? Rowling was ORIGINAL and she wrote BEAUTIFULLY. No one can compare to Rowling, that’s my opinion.
I’m not hating Stephenie Meyers. I think she writes pretty well–until Twilight came out. Again, I don’t hater Stephenie Meyers. I just hate the Twilight series.
I personally enjoy the books, though I’ve only read like five books in my life. I can see why people don’t like it.
I could easily tell Twilight was one of Meyer’s first book, she said ‘I’ a lot which got really repetitive.
I think I like it because it’s out of the normal love story like The Notebook and what-not.
I for one don’t imagine myself being in Bella’s shoes or only read the books for that reason,
And for those people that don’t like the book, I’m not going to throw my hands up in the air and point at you and hate you because you don’t like them, its fine, its just a book. Your entitled to your opinion and everybody has different a different taste in litterature and I don’t think its wrong that there are websites that are here for the sole purpose of bashing on Meyer and the Twilight saga because frankly there are just as many, if not more, that worship it.
I liked reading these posts though, I getta differnt view on the books and what not.
Honestly i’ve read all of the twilight series. why have i done that? because i want to be a writter and i want to learn more and even i with my sweet 16 can say that i’ve almost never seen such a poor writting, i could do a better job with it. Everything is such a cliche, how can everyone fall for her if shes not all that? the only character i like is jacob because he seems real. Fantasy books should remain close to juman feelings to make sense. Anne Rice writtes about vampires, actually she just kick ass shes the best, but thats not the point. She writtes about a thing that dont exist, creat all sort of legends and even though remain close to the reality. all the characters are complex like human being should do. none of them live kinda in a raibow thats annoying. A portuguese writter is so much better and no one know who she is. all fans of fantasy writing would love that. if someone need a translation from that books you would see how wonderful they are. they are really worth =)
I just finished Twilight (I too finally gave in and wasted a good chunk of my weekend) and I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment. However, my interaction with fans, many of whom I thought were fairly enlightened, has been more depressing than a simple yelling match.
Even the fourteen-year-old fangirl who enthusiastically ask me what I thought of it was only visibly taken aback by my evaluation (“It wasn’t good at all”). She didn’t take offense, but wanted to know more, to see my rationale.
“There were just too many inconsistencies for me to enjoy it.”
“Like, what do you mean?”
“Do car tires screech on pavement?”
“Yes.”
“How about on ice?” I live in Upstate NY where we do get severe ice storms.
She wanted more, so I gave it to her.
“So, Bella gets sick at the ‘smell’ of blood?”
“Yep.”
“OK, so why was she not ill when she watched nurses remove Tyler’s ‘bloodstained bandages’ revealing dozens of tiny cuts?”
“Hmm. Well, that’s, like… I dunno. But, like, just don’t think when you read it. You just have to, you know, read it for the story.”
W-T-F?
I would expect as much from someone who grew up on Harry Potter (sry, not a fan), but this has been the attitude of college-educated adults who ask my opinion on the novel. I would be less concerned by the stubborn fans who simply refuse to hear why the book is not good than I am by people who listen, evaluate my arguments, then simply decide that I’m being over analytical.
I’ve just started reading the book, but I will not admit it to my friends. What makes me hate the book are those little pre-pubescent girls that go around thinking Edward is real. “I LOVE VEGGIE VAMPIRES!” <— crap like that makes me sick. These girls swear that defending the Cullen/Swan honor will make them cool, as if the characters in the book will accept them into their fantasy world. I don’t get it…it’s a book. The book is okay, I don’t mind it, but the ridiculous tween fans are what turns many people away. Veggie Vampires my ass….
Hey, I too hate the books of twilight. To me they are uninteresting and repeat themselves over and over. I read all three hopinh something will happen but nothing did. The books have no plot whatsoever. The character ‘Vicktoria” just shows up randomly and so does everything else. The book makes you look stupid because you can’t figure out the plot cause their is none. People say that I’m not “imagining” the things right. How am I supposed to imagine them? Their is really nothing to imagine if all they do the entire book is walk around trying to find a vampire that tries to kill Bella for no real reason. It also makes me angry when I say I like Harry Potter and instead of them having a normal discussion about it, they start yelling at me that “Harry Potter sucks” and that “its gay” and “Twilight is soooo much better” but they really don’t give a real reason for it. ANd worst, most of them didn’ even read it and their talking sh*t. I don’t believe Stephanie Meyers should of made millions on this book. I don’t find it intersting at all.
Okay, I’m a fan of the book. But I’m not the kind that Pray’s to god that I want to Bella from the book or whatever. I think those people are psycho if ther like that beacuse it’s just a about love like almost any other book. All I think is the book is great, but some of the fans are just crazy!!!
I loathe twilight. Don’t tell me you wouldn’t find it creepy if some dude, no matter how ‘pretty’, just gets through telling you he had plans to murder you but has changed his mind and has been stalking you ever since.
Do you know that mtv wanted to make a movie about it but wanted it to be more hip and with bella as a more interesting character (a hip trackstar–interesting!-and maybe with a bit of a personality)? They were actually trying to do her a big favor by making it work! but of course meyer and her legions of sick fans screamed no like rabid mindless banshees that they are…
I am a Twilight fan, but it is nice to know some of your opinions. But to Angie #4, Im really not a shallow person just because I read twilight and Im not insecure. And in no way under any circumstances would I wanna be with Edward or Jacob, or be in Bella’s shoes. Jacob is really annoying and Edward is like the biggest guilt trip EVER.
Im not angry with anyone who dosent like the book, and to be honest I thought it was pretty brave to post something like this as a blog because I would HATE to get so many mean and disgusting comments. and I agree with a lot of you guys who post some stuff, like people who think vampires are real. ? siiick!
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!! i hate twilight, but whenever i tell somebody it looks like they’re almost ready to kill me! this book does nothing but mess up teens’ minds (as if they’re not messed up enough) plus the author isn’t a very talented writer either. most of my friends love it except one, but i absolutley HATE it! and anybody who disagrees with me, bite me!
OK. I don’t get it. I just finished reading Twilight. after hearing all the bad reviews, and gushingly positive comments I figured I had to read it. Its not bad. It aint Dostoyevsky. But its a lot more fun to read. I have to say I was less appaled then I am about many books. Bella is brave, fearless even when it comes to protecting her family and loved ones. The clumsyness is endearing. And it was refreshing that she wanted to be a vampire instead of all the nonsense about wanting to be human. Humanity isn’t about your species. Its about the choices you make, and that was a big point in the book. I approve. What do you all hate so much? Is it necessary to you that the heroine has to be negative surly and loud mouthed? I think its refreshing to have someone less bi…errr feisty.
Hi Mar, its Mel. π
Funny, the one character I did not care for is Jacob. He falls for Bella immediately while she is conning him, and keeps pushing himself on her in hopes she will abandon someone she likes more passionately, and then he hates the Culens who have been nice to him(even Edward) because he realizes they really are vampires. Isn’t that prejudice of a sort? Are you guys sure you don’t just like him because he hates Edward? I am not saying that is wrong. The fact that you hate Edward does however validate the book, does it not? If he really were so ineptly characterized you would not hate or love him or Bella for that matter. Its obvious your feelings are too strong for the characters to be totally flat. To hate them you must get some sense of who they are.
woah dude i love you. we should hate it together.
the only reason i dont like twilight is because people obsess over it. its the only thing they can talk about, and its annoying. and i bet its not even a good book they just like it for the romance
Okay, that is just wrong!
Those people have no write to snap back at you for a simple opinion.
You simply didn’t like the book. Gave reasons for the opinion. Period.
Seriously, people are immature idiots these days! What happened to freedom of opinion!
I am in the middle of Twilight, and had to find out if others thought it sucked as much as I do. It’s not adult reading at all. It’s slow, dull, bleak minded. The writing is choppy and juvenile. The storyline is stolen from Anne Rice and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Not original people! I am sorely disappointed. How is there so much hype about this?
All right, so. I am completely in love with the books. Now, I’m not trying to change your mind about liking them, it’s a hopeless case, I see. But have you tried to see our side, though? Yes, you’ve read the books, but were they the kind of books that you usually read?
For example, I like romance. I love reading romance novels a lot. So when I read Harry Potter, I though, “Ew, stop NOW.”
So I did. It was boring, in my opinion. It was too much fantasy for me. But I’m not blogging about it saying how freakishly stupid people are and how much I hate them for liking the book. If you don’t like the books so much, tune the people out. And just ignore them if they try to change your mind. I don’t see why so many sites are up over this. Same advice to the people who freak out over NOT Liking Twilight: It’s awesome to some, it’s shit to others. “Deal with it.”
So, I want to add, that if you don’t like the people who are obsessed with Twilight, don’t make fun of them. It hurts, no duh. It’s pointless!
I like a friendly debate, too. So email me if you want to discuss this. I want to see your point of view.
Okay, the books do suck. But you have to admit that SMeyer is pretty smart. She wrote exactly what every girl between ages 12-16 fantasize about: a perfect, totally hot, filthy rich guy who falls in love with a weak and average girl. So the books may not be good but I admire SMeyer for putting up with writing a few crappy books for a bunch of money.
Just for the record.
You are my hero.
Thank god.
I am soooo glad to finally find a large group of people who hate Twilight. I promised a friend I would read them, not knowing the drivel that awaited me. Here’s my shortlist of reasons to despise this series:
*The vampires ARE NOT ACTUALLY VAMPIRES. Vampires have fangs for God’s sake! And they do not sparkle like fucking disco balls in the sun. That’s the most ridiculous thing evar.
*The werewolves ARE NOT ACTUALLY WEREWOLVES. Werewolves are affected by the full moon. That’s not something “Hollywood made up”, as Jacob would have us believe. That’s been part of werewolf lore for centuries. Werewolves are not like the Hulk. That is also ridiculous.
*There are TONS of grammatical errors throughout the series (i.e. tense changes, continuity errors, unclear pronoun shifts, and the word “literally” was misused 5 TIMES! Argh!)
*Bella is the single most weak character I have ever encountered in a work of fiction, be it book, TV, or film. She only wants to please whichever man is in her life at any given moment, she assumes EVERYTHING is her fault, she doesn’t care if becoming a vampire takes away her immortal soul because “there is no Heaven without Edward in it” BAH, she has NO personality, NO self-esteem, a negative self-image, and the list goes on….
*There is no antagonist throughout the whole series. This makes me crazy! I’ve decided that I, as the reader, am the antagonist because I’m the only one that consistently want’s to do harm to Bella.
There’s so much more I could go on about, but I did say “shortlist”. I guess this is about as short as I can make it.
Good for you to post this blog! I can only imagine the hateful garbage replies you must have gotten.
<3Nikki
I totally agree with you,
I don’t loath Twilight or anything,
the book just pisses me off -.-
the story is WAY~ to clichee and the characters are so Mary Sue~
It’s predictable to the end,
hell I didn’t even finish the saga, and I predict Bella and Ed will probably get married and have a kid,
When I first read Twilight (no one knew about it yet)
I though it was more of a fanfiction, than a book, it’s sad really, cause there’s many great writers who won’t get a chance to publish they stuff and SM get’s to publish the most cheesy clicheed story ever, and it turns to be a best seller!
so, so sad~
ps-
Bella and dwards ‘romance’
is NOTHING compared to Romeo and Juliet, I can’t even begin to comprehend why anyone in their state of mind would even THINK about comparing such a wonderfull tragic love story, to a mere fanfic.
Seriously, whoever says that BxE is better than RxJ. has obviously not read RxJ
I LOVE TWILIGHT AND I DOUBT YOU CAN CHANGE MY ABOUT IT.
BUT I DON’T HATE YOU FOR WRITING THIS BLOG ACTUALLY I RESPECT YOU FOR TAKING THE COURAGE TO TELL PEOPLE HOW YOU FEEL. YOU MUST OF GOTTEN TONS OF HATE MAIL. I A A TWILIGHT FAN BUT THAT DOEN’T MEAN I HATE PEOPLE WHO HATE TWILIGHT THEY CAN HATE\LIKE WHATEVER THE HELL THEY WANT TO. I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW TWILIGHT FANS AREN’T CRAZY THEY JUST LIKE SOMETHING YOU DON’T
twilight sucks! its nothing ore than a stupid love story. its so predictable, there is no suspence, and its only common sence that they would end up being with eachother and having a kid.
wait, wait, wait… how the hell did they have a kid? thats impissible. reasons:
vampires dont have a beating heart, which means they cant re-produce blood, thus giving them the uncontrolable thrust. also, without a beating heart, there is no blood flow. now without bloodflow, a man cannot get his ‘wanker’ up(bonner), and without a bonner, its impossible to sperm. so if the vampire doesnt have a beating heart(which means no blood flow, how did he get his wanker up? answer: HE CANT! and since he cant, he cant release sperm and cant have kids. so thats one major flaw in the book that the author forgot to do research on.
summary of novel: some chick mindlesly falls in love with a vampire knowing he needs to suck blood to live and will have a bunch of vampires trying to kill her. then she meets a wearwolf, decides to be with the vampire, and they have a kid somehow…
this is a romantic version of underworld: Main character vampire meets a human and falls in love with them. because of this, the rest of his/her kind(vampires) if out to kill this human. and then a wearwolf(Likan) falls in love with the chick and the vampire/wearwolf fight for this human. then they have sex and live happily ever after.
sounds just like underworld, minus the cool action scenes and good story line.
Yeah finally people who don’t like Twilight. I work in a bookstore and was curious to see what the hype was about. It took me about one day to read each book. People said it was because it was so good, NO, it was because it was so predictable you could skim though the 700+ pages without delving into the plot or characters at all. It wasn’t complex or creative.
Here is what I thought of the book.
“Twilight is nothing but a romance novel with less adjectives”
Seriously there are hundreds and hundreds of romance authors who have written exactly what Stephanie Myers wrote. Handsome vampire falls in love with girl who thinks she has flaws but he is torn between loving her and not being with her for her own safety. Oh and romance novels end happily. They also have sex. I was going to say Twilight didn’t but it was implied so much in Breaking Dawn, it was sickening or did you not get the whole ‘breaking the headpost and ripping apart the pillows on the honeymoon scene” Girls that like Twilight are future romance novel addicts. Women who like Twilight are people that don’t want to be ‘catagorized’ as a romance novel reader because it is embarrashing so they read Twilight to satisfy their forbidden needs even thought the series is a plagarism off romance novels. It’s sad that ppl think this is the best thing out there and I was sick to my stomach and wanted to punch whoever said it was on the same level as Harry Potter. Oh but don’t get me wrong it was SO original. The werewolf vs vampire cough *underworld* or where a vampire falls in love with a human girl cough *Amanda Ashley, Christine Feehan, Sookie Stackhouse Charlaine Harris, Laura Hamilton, Katie MacAlister, Nina Bangs, Ronda Thompson, Lindsey Sands, Susan Squires . . . . . . . . ” I could easily keep going and going and going but no Stephanie Myers is SO original and Twilight is the answer to all. Yeah Right. I really hope this is a fade that dies out quickly because it is seriously getting annoying
I havn’t read twilight and I guess that doesn’t make me such a good judge to it but just hearing about it and coming to school each day to hear about , and only about twilight and edward and bella and how perfert they are.
I hate it.
Thank goodness I am not alone! My friend wants me to rethink my decision on hating the books but I won’t hear her out. I hate vampires! these books are a waste of time, and people should be reading something more knowledge full, in my opinion of course. CURSE stupid twilight fans! I’m very glad to know there are other people out there like me, and surely my friend will not believe me when I mention there’s a whole website dedicated for hating twilight, people have to reason to get mad over our opinions! If we don’t like the books get over it, its our problem, not yours!
yes, yes, yes π
well i have read three out the the four and well i got about half way into four and i can no longer continue to read it. oh pls- its very little girls cinderella dream- a man to fall deeply in love with them- watching them sleep at night(ah creepy) control and demand her to do what he wants her to do, not have any friends outside of the ones that he appoves, dismantels the truck so she is unable to flee…yup that is what every girl wants- i do have a few questions..
what makes bella so wonderful that ed is willing to expose himself and his family?
is she really that wonderful that two-non-human beings would fight for her?.
these books could of all been compressed into one short story
girl meets boy who has a dark side..he likes to drink blood…boy tries not to kill girl, girl falls in love with boy, boy breaks girls heart, girl sad, runs to friend- friend thinks that girl will one day fall in love with friend…nope friend wrong—girl runs to save boy- girl and boy fall in love and live happily ever after as un dead. pretty much about it….now if there was some fight with boy and friend…maybe friend dying or something horriable…ah it could be worth while….but like every fairy tale- it ends with them riding off into the setting sun.
would i call it the greatest book ever….no- anyone that does-hasnt read very many books. is it the worst….no-
i did enjoy the whole escaping factor-its a stupid easy read.
I stumbled across your blog, because I was searching for information on Twilight. I live in Switzerland, and here the books aren’t as well known. So, when I saw ‘Breaking Dawn’ at 3 of my most frequented bookshops, I grew intrigued by it. Always careful when it comes to very publicised books (not that it has to be bad, I just loved Harry Potter), I started searching for information on Meyers works.
What struck me was the great division between the readers. It seems the kind of book that you hate or love, but it doesn’t seems to leave people indifferent. An other fascinating thing is, that a lot of people who didn’t like the books are much more rational when it comes to the reasons for their dislikes. Most fans (not all of them, so please don’t get offended too easily) are more like ,Oh, Meyers is the best!!!!!!!’ and ‘Edward is HOOOOTTT!!!’ and ‘I wan’t X (insert random Cullen name) as my birthday present!!!!! π It’s very funny.
But honestly, to all the people who disliked the books and to you, dear author of this blog: Do you regret having read it? I’m not asking if you disliked it, I’m asking more along the line if you would tell a friend to read the first Volume of the Saga to form an independent opinion, or if you would tell them not to, because you consider it useless.
Hey… for a moment, thought I was alone…. I hate twilight too… it tells a live about a stupid girl that is in a stupid love… and it is envolving the whole world…. they gotta get their own lifes… but anyways.. if you don’t like twilight, people, I mean, girls like you leave all alone… twilight is making me lose my friends :S
Dumbest novel ever. Unless you are a 13 yo or younger or do not have respect for literature i don’t know how you can like this. It’s predictable and cliched, repetitive and boring. The first 150 pages are about a girl that is troubled and thinks she’s deep then the guy that she stares at constantly saves her, just like prince charming and she falls in love. That’s a matter of 15 pages really. Then the first 350 pages are about why he is so perfect then she shoves a plot in there out of no where. Confusing too.
“Girls that like Twilight are future romance novel addicts. Women who like Twilight are people that donβt want to be βcategorizedβ as a romance novel reader because it is embarrassing so they read Twilight to satisfy their forbidden needs even though the series is a plagarism off romance novels.”
Thanks Sarah. You voiced what I couldn’t quite grasp verbally.
Besides: The “Harry Potter”-comparisons are ever so insulting. Rowling does not write drivelling gooey romances for teens and housewives, but excellently plotted fantasy for kids and adults alike. Even if her vocab is rather simple it never descends on Meyer’s level (which, in my opinion, is that of a 12-year-old girl, that watched “Sense and Sensibility” too many times).
I agree with you, I actually have only read the first book though. more for my own review. I never really had a problem with it except with girls being creepy and stuff, and talking about this edward fellow.
so I read it to see what all the fuss was about. I hated then to be honest. I found myself in a whirlwind of run on sentances and long boring descriptions of everything.
I gave the book a 40/100. the charactors were horrible and th e plot… a wait there wasnt one.
Oh btw sry for splin’ im on psp
I also do loathe twilight.
Maybe I should’ve read it a few years back when it wasn’t such a craze, but I will never know. I’ve only read a third of it and I hated every single bit of it. The ones that are a fan of it but are saying “OMG ITS SUCH A TREND NOW” are the same ones wearing the “Team Edward” shirts.
I read the twilight series with an open mind, knowing that it was young adult fiction and all. The first book was incredibly repetitive and the character Bella seemed ordinary with no ambition other than to be with this Edward character. Edward seems to have everything, yet nothing because he is trapped looking between the ages of 16-27, which limits what he can do with a career and whom he can date without looking ridiculous. However, Edward seems to be able to play piano and has completed a few degrees. Whereas, throughout the series the character Bella only cared about becoming a vampire and being with Edward… and then when it happened having an unplanned baby at the age of 18. Not a very good role model for young girls… she didn’t even care about an education or travelling the world or even her family. So basically this book tells young girls to find a hot guy in highschool, obsess over him, hope that he follows them around obsessively, give up everything for him and run away with him. Hmmm not something I’d want my kids reading at 14 with those hormones and the have “fun” attitude they have at that immature age. What would really be sad is to see this book being allowed to be read for book reports and papers in english… lol. I just hope teachers aren’t that DUMB.
Personally, I liked the character Jacob. I really thought the author almost killed her ability to convince readers that this obsession with Edward is really love. I was thankful for it, but sad that Bella, who for an instant saw her life full, with children, her family and her friends included, threw it away for this Edward character who basically stalked her obsessively. I also thought that this “voice” of Edwards that she was hearing in which one was it… I think “New Moon”… was absolutely ridiculous and I nearly stopped reading…. but then there was Jacob and I thought that made things kind of interesting so I continued. At least they did stuff other than talk about their inability to be intimate because Edward wanted to eat the object of his affection…
I thought it was ridiculous that the sun made the vampires look like crystal. Like how much sun caused this? How much of a shadow is enough? Wouldn’t vampires get caught? Also this “rule” new vampires were suppose to follow…. by being taught by their creators…. while altogether being insanely captivated by all humans blood just seems… unlikely to me. If you are technically insane.. how are you suppose to understand logic especially if you had just been thrown into this crazy new life with all these needs…
It boils down to a bad soap opera that is really easy to read, really predictable and absolutely trash for young adults….
i know some people who all they do is talk about this book. i have not even read it, but from people just spewing out facts and obsessing over the book can even recite some “interesting” quotes from it. some books are popular because they are good. books like this are popular because of people trying to fit in with others and because of the whole social status of society that we live in.
i gotta say that i love some of the reactions that you got from other people on the previous post of yours. i am with you, i cannot believe some of the things that were said. just reading that would make someone not want to read the book because it turns you into some sort of shallow, incumbent nut case that just endlessly rants and complains with no direction or point or proof of argument in sight.
it is also really true what you said, as well as many other before me, have brought out that it somewhat damages our society. true, we do want to escape, and believe me i like to zone out and pretend that things are a little bit better then they are right now in reality, but there is a limit. don’t these twilight obsessed knobs ask themselves “hey, how about i work on my future? get a job? talk with my friends about something else? get some other hobbies? it is a story, move on. it is a book that you read for enjoyment. maybe it put a mark on you, but it shouldn’t change you into a completely different person. you know people don’t have a life when they put some glued inky pieces of paper typed and bound together above real life issues. thats it for me.
I feel somewhat disgusted with myself. I first read it in seventh grade (now I’m in tenth) and I litterally thought it was one of the top ten books I’ve read. Boy, have I come far from that. Somewhere is heaven Jane Austen is shaking her head at this pathetic junk called, Twilight. I’ve learned that I am the only female that did not enjoy the series in my school. It seems that many men realise the cliched-ness of the book and girls. So I just hang out with the guys when my friends enter their “Edward-Cullen-Is-The-Best” stage. Actaully, I don’t even have a problem with Edward in the book–it’s the plot and Bella that drive me nuts. Bella can’t take care of herself one day, she’s very needy. That’s not a good way to start off a book. The plot goes downhill from the first book.
I know a lot of people on the web though that seriously take their haterd of the book the new levels. It is just as bad as obsessing about the books. I hope one day my friends will look back at the books and laugh at it’s idociy. *hopefully* And it sickens me so see girls stating that it is the best book in the world, when in reality they haven’t read many books. I was one of them, I know how it feels. It feels much better to be educated.
Twilight is flat out terrible.
I understand suspension of belief, but trying to believe these characters are anything other than pathetic is pushing the limits.
The plot line is so terrible I couldn’t find the words to express my disappointment.
If I attempted to turn that in to my college professor, he’d probably tell me not to show my face anymore.
I’d go into detail on why the books are terrible, but I don’t even have the energy for that.
The only book I can say was worse than Twilight was Eragon, and that’s ONLY because the 15 year old stole half his ideas from some of the most prominent science fiction/fantasy stories ever created. Even Paloni manages to write better than Meyer on an overall scale, and he was 15 at the time.
Stephanie Meyer had better be thanking her lucky stars. The success of her book comes only because people have stopped actively reading books and have decided to enjoy whatever crap comes their way.
Yes, I’m bitter against Twilight fans. They’ve threatened me for my views, raided my dorm and put posters of it everywhere and done other crap I won’t mention.
You’d think we were electing a president, for goodness sakes.
I watched a video of Stephenie Meyer on Yahoo! about Breaking Dawn when it was just coming out. Good Lord, the things she said just made me want to send a critique email to her! D:
She said that the first book, Twilight, was loosely based off of Pride and Prejudice.
Lizzie Bennet = Bella Swan?! No WAY, JOSE. And comparing Mr. Darcy to Edward Cullen? No, no, no, and another big FAT NO. I’d rather read about one of Mr. Darcy than twenty dozen Edward Cullens.
And then…should I keep going? I mean, it gets worse. Much, much worse…anyways, yes, we all know the second book had “Romeo and Juliet” in it, but that didn’t tick me off since I kinda like the Romeo+Juliet theme.
What made me completely angry was that (supposedly) the third book of the Twilight “saga” was based on Wuthering Heights.
O_O
That’s right, Wuthering Heights. One of the greatest, most tragic love stories ever. One of the best literary works of art. DX
Sure, go ahead, like the book (crazy fangirls!), BUT, don’t shove your morals down others’ throats (too late for that, ain’t it?), DO NOT instill physical wrath when someone tells you they don’t like that piece of junk, and last but CERTAINLY not least – do not prostrate yourselves for a book that reads like badly written fanfiction.
…
Yeah, like that’d ever happen.
I echo Julia.
It’s obvious that people nowadays don’t read anything worth their time, and when they’re presented with stuff like…like…well, like THAT, they think it’s “teh best buk ever ritten!”
…
Another stop. That felt good to write, but I also feel kinda bad about it, too. If what Mrs. Meyers says is truthful about how she loves her characters, then it’d be a pretty bad blow with all this hate circulating around.
Well…then, no publishing would have been better, right?
Even if what she says is true, she should have never compared her work to Emily Bronte’s or Jane Austen’s.
That’s like a new musician saying he’s the next Mozart.
-.-
Well, this has dragged on a fair bit. I’m sorry if I bored you with my tedious writing.
Have a nice day. : )

The simple fact of the matter is this: the book series shows unrealistic and unwholesome relationships to a stupid and impressionable generation of adolescents. Threatening suicide or harm and emotional control of another person (Edward towards Bella) is not a sign of a good realistic relationship. Bella and Edward are in lust not love. Bella is so enfatuated (not in love) with Edward that when he callously leaves her, she practicaly looses her will to live and becomes a zombie. She is willing to die just to hear Edward’s voice one more time. This is not healthy and does not in any way resemble a healthy real-life relationship. I believe that it is inexcusable to portray suicide in such an understandable and okay light in a frigin’ teen novel. I’m not saying Stephanie Meyer is a bad person or even meant to portray her characters in this light. I’m saying that she writes shallow novels for the masses and wrote a book for people who believe in a magical, very fake, world in which people can live happy lives together only with obsession and lust.
When I read this it takes me back to my high school years when I was surrounded by stupid kids who care about things that don’t really matter.
No Thanks
I did read the Twilight series. But I didn’t enjoy it one bit! The author doesn’t describe the character’s personalities very well, and I don’t see why Edward and Bella fell in love (well, beyond the fact that she smells nice and he’s hot). Bella is way too needy and this book sends out a message to teenage girls that you NEED a guy to have your life be complete, and without that guy life is not worth living! It’s just ridiculous. I asked a girl in my school who was fawning over Twilight if she’d even heard of The Scarlet Letter, Wuthering Heights, and other classics. In response, she chirped, “Sure! But Twilight is like, the best book ever. It’s like a better version of Romeo and Juliet!” >=O Ridiculous!! I was extremely angry that every female in my school is regarding this book like it’s their Bible. The same girl also thought that New Moon was so sad, it made her cry. I think all the books are sad- pathetic really. It’s ridiculous to teach girls to be depressed and suicidal over their first lost “love”.
End of rant. =)
Love,
R
I loved the books when they first came out. But i started noticing some changes in myself. For example, i actually started hating my boyfriend for not being like Edward. I was so in love with Edward that i pushed my boyfriend away for a book. I was angry all of the time because of it, and mean while, my boyfriend was going crazy trying to convince me he wasn’t real. Finally i was convinced! I had to take a break from the book, which as a result i am still not able to read it. But i realized (Thanks to my boyfriend), That Bella can HAVE Edward. I would much rather have the guy who writes i love you in the snow and makes dumb jokes about my fat cat. Has anyone ever notice that Bella and Edward NEVER have fun? It’s always so serious and dramatic, and that is not what a relationship is all about. They never just laugh and enjoy eachothers company.
And another thing…how can a girl EVER be average with a name like Beautiful Swan? God, didn’t anyone notice how lame Smeyer is. I am just so glad i got out of it with my amazing relationship still intact. That book nearly destroyed me because i was a fool, believeing it’s false lies. I just hope other teenage girls don’t fall for it aswell.
thankgod! it’s so refreshing to know that not the entirety of the worlds’ population is desperately in love with the overrated commercially driven CRAP that is the twilight series!!
>___<‘
i am a 16 year old girl, and i love books, even before this ‘phenomenon’ had made reading books suddenly “COOL”.
it is insane!! how anyone make this much money shovelling lies and badly plotted relationships between an ANNOYING, NEEDY AND PATHEITC girl and a “brooding, sexy and rebellious” vampire.
i bought the book a while ago, and i read it, because everyone had drilled it into my head that it was amazing, and by then my whole school was knee-deep in the ‘twilight obssession’ that was sweeping the world.
to be honest, when i was at home one day and began to read it, i threw it at the wall one-third of the way through, and to be honest, i should have thrown it at the very beginning.
it is THE MOST OVERRATED PIECE OF CRAP I HAVE EVER READ IN MY LIFE,
how can our vulnerable teenage girls read this, and suddenly think that they are ‘unique’ and ‘cool’ because they read “books” (i wouldn’t even call twilight a book) other than cosmopolitan or rolling stone? none of you are cool, so GET OUT OF MY FACE with that bulls***.
they need to read real books,
tale of two cities, the gargoyle, harry potter (:D i don’t care, the harry potter series owned! jkr is my jesus!), vanity fair, emma…. all the classics.
everyone knows that vampires are a universally adored symbol for our teens, something that MTV and pete wentz made popular a few years ago. they are like the mascots for the entire emo scene; which BY THE WAY died out in 2007!!!!#&#*^%
i have lost a LOT of my friends over this crap, and that has caused me to hate twilight even more. when the movie comes out, i won’t waste my money on seeing it in the movies, because it will be IMPOSSIBLE to even get a seat in the movies with all the tweens wearing their “Team Edward/Jacob” tshirts and freshly cut fringes covering their faces. and just yesterday, i heard samples from the new soundtrack, and TO MY DISGUST, paramore sing the title track!!!!!
i am ashamed, i mean, i never really LOVED paramore, but come ON. hayley williams is dead to me.
thankyou for creating this brilliant blog/haters club; the hater mail only means that eventually, the fangirls will realise how much this crap is eating away at their developing brains! D:
much love, xx
Did anyone notice that Bella’s mother is as lame and needy as her daughter? In the begining Bella is talking about her mother, stating that since she was with a man, then her bills would be paid for and there would be gas in her car. Sigh…I would kill my mother if she were like that.
I dont think ur stupid for not loving twilight……..i personally LOVE the book but if you dont like it who cares? my bff since i was 2 despises the book but i got over it along time ago….and even though i think stephinie meyers wrote pure genius it was rediculus that she threw a teper tantrum when someone posted midnight sun illegaly on the internet…….she wont even finish the book!!!! Ugh! ohh well…… in a way i kind of admire the way you speak your feelings instead of being like “ohh yeah i like the book twilght” when you really dont……. well any ways i hope you dont think im trying to force my love of twilight on you…. if you feel that way im sorry that wasnt my intent……
Duudeee, AMEN .
i love you guysss.
[:
I agree with you fully. I do fall in the teen area, being fifteen, though upon reading the book I lost almost all of my respect for people’s taste in ‘good writing’.
I actually happened upon someone a while back who was comparing the author to George Orwell when it comes to depth and plot meaning. This had me totally blown away. Orwell was a master of giving things many layers of emotional meaning while Meyer presents us with awe inspiring levels of stupidity and single demensions.
Many of my friends are rabid fans, and one of them in particular somehow believes that she and Bella are almost the same persnoality wise, even though Bella has little personality to begin with. Of course my friend itsn’t the type to get all that angry. Upon hearing my argument on the book she very nearly burts into tears, having taken it as a deeply personal offense.
I don’t share a deep hatred for the books themselves as much as the messages that I’m getting from them. It’s like saying that it’s sexy to be in an abusive relationship, and perfectly fine to be weak as long as you have a strong man there to save you.
I fear for the minds of the teenage years now that these books are abound. I have seen them ravaging minds litterally and it has gotten so bad at one point with a girl I know that she draws her and Edward’s names in hearts all over notes that she takes in class.
I have gotten through most of Ray Bradbury’s Farenheit 451. The Twilight series makes me scared that in order to numb minds getting rid of the books isn’t needed. Just writing like Meyer does enough damage to people’s minds.
I started to read some of the comments some of you had on the site and I had to stop because there was so much. I’m not a crazy Twilight fan. I went to a book signing and, honestly, Stephanie seemed like she didn’t want to be there. She couldn’t answer certain questions and seemed bored. There are parts of the book that are extremely cute, but then again, love stories always pull me in. But honestly Bella is soo stupid. She is too dependent on Edward and is willing to kill herself in order to hear his voice. The movie just came out and showed the book in the worst possible way. All this praise is all over the place when the movie was horrible!
(please understand everyone is entitled to there opinion. Don’t harrass me or anyone else.)
i totally agree with you these books are on my last nerve
i told someone they had no life cuz they read the whole book in like 6 hours and tehy had the nerve to say they had more of a life then me
so i cussed them out it pissed me off
Please please please check out the website twilightsucks.com.
It is a haven for people like you and me who despise the book and everything it stands for. The members present valid, logical arguments against the books and even fans of the books are welcomed if they are willing to keep an open mind and willing to discuss the books without sending death wishes to the members.
Personally, I hate the book because of the values (the subtle and not so subtle hints) it implants in the minds of young women. The book is so monotonous and repetitive that one is sucked into a hypnotic state and can only spout the same ideologies Bella believes. “OMG Eddykins is soo hotttt!!!!”
Brainwashing aside, there are a few critical issues I have with the books (I’ve read Twilight but have been informed by Twilight fans what happens in the rest of the series).
1. Edward displays all the characteristics of an psychological and emotional abuser.
Effect on young women: Go for a guy who watches you while you sleep, follows you to cities because he thinks you can’t take care of yourself (though you’ve survived your entire life thus far), grabs you and whisks you away physically without your consent, threatens to kill you, and follows you 24/7 even though he says he wants to stay away-mental abuse anyone?
2. Bella has no ambitions, hobbies, or a social life of any kind outside of the Cullen family. To people who are nice to her, she is dismissive and disgusted. To the one person who wants to stay away from her, she is mesmerized.
Effect on young girls: Live your life only for your man and be a b*&#$ to everyone else.
3. Apparently, in New Moon (the second book), she undertakes nearly suicidal hobbies so she can “hear Edward’s voice in her head”… um… she needs mental help if she is hearing auditory hallucinations (SM has herself said these are auditory hallucinations).
Effect on young girls: If your boyfriend breaks up with you, do physically dangerous activities that are borderline suicidal because of the depression you sink into when the sole reason you for whom you are living leaves you.
4. Apparently, she makes it into Dartmouth… and doesn’t want to go. Great plug for edcation.
Effect on young girls: You don’t need an education to make it in this world as long as you have your man.
5. I’m not sure which book this is in, but apparently in the lovemaking scene (which is of course appropriate for young teen girls), Edward bruises her and doesn’t stop even after she passes out.
Effect on young girls: I am not even going to go there.
6. Fourth book, Bella has a baby (nevermind that she is only 18) even though it pretty much kills her. Vampire babies eat their way out.
Effect on young girls: Even if your baby will kill you, you must give birth because that’s what good girls/women do.
These are just a FEW issues I have with the book. These issues do not even begin to describe the multitude of other inconsistencies found within the books. For instance, wouldn’t baseball bats and baseballs break if they were hit so hard that it sounded like thunder?
If Jasper and Alice have exceptional hearing, why couldn’t they hear Bella talking to James?
I am upset because of all the comparisons to great literary writers this book gets. Open up any high school literary anthology (what they should be reading) and see.
If you like fiction for young adults, Ender’s game, The Golden Compass, Harry Potter, The Giver, etc. are great.
I am also upset because people tell me I am unromantic, unimaginative, and that there is something wrong with me when I voice my opinion. My opinion is my opinion.
When an average, or less than average book gains so much popularity and pushes unhealthy morals and ideas on young impressionable girls, I get angry.
Read the book. It was horrible.
I honestly felt in some places that I was reading over the same sentence that I just did, over again. And again.
And people comparing it to Harry Potter – Don’t. Harry Potter has it’s own little universe based on a library of predefined fantasy creatures and lore, whereas Twilight is basically just a Prince Charming story. With Eddy The Handsome Vampire being Prince Charming, of course.
Don’t understand how anyone could compare it to Romeo and Juliet. God, it sickens me.
Bella has no real character flaws. Maybe she’s not the world’s hottest girl. But god dammit, do the other characters act like it! Even when she’s damned near close to failing at something and exposing some serious emotional depth to her character, Eddy comes in to save the day.
Not to mention that she’s an emo bitch. She’s 17,18,19 years old and she acts like a 14 year old on her period. Shit, man.
I really can’t get over how terribly written this book was. It really, REALLY reminded me of the Earth’s Children series. Don’t get me wrong, those books were really really REALLY well written, I just can’t stand Ayla. After the first two books, there are no real challenges that face her. She’s just too perfect.
so, ive read all the books and personally i was bored with it. i read it cuz i wanted to see some vampires kicking ass or something which i got…kind of. there was only actual action in the end of the book. but i went on to read new moon and loved new moon. i just did. and then eclipse was great too. and breaking dawn was pretty good in my opinion. before the movie came i out i reread twilight and it was better the second time. i am 14, and loved the books. but before u say oh god of course another 14 year old whose obsessed with twilight and thinks edward is hot. think again. i did not love the books because of edward. and when i went to see the movie i laughed.. the whole time. any true twilight fan who actually loved the books because of the story did not actually like twilight the movie. i actually hate ppl who only see the movie because of how hot edward cullen is. the movie was weak and missed parts that wud soon be very important to the movies to come. i have to admit stephanie meyers doesnt write very well. she had a good idea and wrote it out. some parts of the book were weak. but the books were great. honestly if u read it im not sure how u can dislike it. oh and j.k. rowling is a better author. ive read like 1 harry potter book and it was amazing. and whoever directed the harry potter movies shud help out with the twilight movie. obviously the writers and director are high when filming the movie because it was hilarious.
btw i meant i was bored with twilight not the series. but the second time reading it was better.
I’m an adult reader – I love vampire fiction and a friend recommended the Twilight book to me. I did read the entire thing but oh my god Stephenie Meyer is such an awful writer (Stephenie, buy an “a” why don’t you?) and yes, the book is a total Mary Sue. I felt when I was reading it that it was the sort of wish fulfillment daydream crap I could have written myself – when I was 14!
I won’t go into the plot points or lack thereof but it really annoyed me that this stupid girl was willing to do anything to be with this guy and let him treat her like crap just because he was good looking. That’s great role-modelling for teenaged girls, wouldn’t you say.
I agree the Harry Potter books weren’t so well written either but at least they had engaging and original plots. And next to Meyer, J.K. Rowling reads like Shakespeare.
I won’t bother to see the movie. The hype surrounding this whole series makes me ill.
Hello, I think you would like to join my MySpace group
http://groups.myspace.com/twilighthaterssociety
I’m getting the same responses as you are, and alot of personal attacks. People irrate me sometimes. Anyway, I love you views on the book, which I also think was poorly structured and the character development was abit shit… Nevertheless, thank you for writing!
I understand why you hate it.
Stephenie Meyer isn’t exactly a great writer for your taste, but in my opinion I love Twilight (and the other books, as well)!
But keep in mind I’m in eighth grade so a teenage vampire love story is something I enjoy reading.
You sound like a very intelligent person who, probably, hates Stephenie Meyer’s writing.
And although I do think Edward is very attractive, I don’t think that would be a good response.
The only thing I am sick of about Twilight is all the people who didn’t read the books, or at least give them a chance, but yet the judge them? I also hate it when people say they are “against the Bible”. It’s a book! I’m not worshiping it (although I know some people might) so there really shouldn’t be a problem. Finally, I am sick of the fakers who think the know every little detail about the book and they haven’t even finished the first one. It’s stupid because I don’t even know everything about the books! Only the author does.
Well, I really liked your post even though I completely did not agree.
I’m a 13 year old girl and I am NOT obsessed with Twilight. Personally I found the first three books okay, but the fourth book was so full of inconsistentsies that I could barey finish it! And I hated that the whole book she was gearing us up for this whole big battle which NEVER happened! And how the heck could they have a baby, thats just wrong!
My friends ask me how I read Pride and Prejudice, and I said there was no comparison, in my mind Pride and Prejudice, The Scarlet Letter etc. are all on a pedistal next to God, while Twilght and such are just lost in my memory.
I was a fan of vampires long before twilight and found some of the changes refreshing. I’m grateful to Stephenie Meyers for not using the same cliches of sunlight and coffins and garlic, or with werewolfs controlled by the full moon.
THe author did disgust me though with the next to none character devolopment, and how the vampire were all like gods to Bella. To me the books were way too perfect!
Never read the books. Saw the film which was fun for the first 20 minutes and then just cringe worthy. Why don’t they just call it a marketing campaign for the pro-abstinence people?
It wasn’t for me. I’m too old and my brain is fully formed. The story is for teen girls and suburban mums who are stuck at home, overweight and fantasize about Byronic heroes.
The dialogue is so terrible.
I felt sorry for the actors.
hi,
i totally agree with you on the fact that these people who have a go at you for not liking twilight are very close minded.
i love the book very much but that is my opinion and i do not ask anyone else to share it. you have the right to your own opinion and so does everybody else.
i have seen the trailers for the film and think it is a hideous abomination but most of the people i know think it looks “amaaaaazing” and every one of them is trying to convince me to see it. it is very irritating and although i have expressed my views, they continue to force their opinions on me.
i completely understand your dislike for the books and had thought to myself previously how little detail is in them, but i just can’t bring myself to not love them.
Well done on standing up for your views!
I don’t like the Twilight series either- just to clear that up.
I happen to be very young (in Middle School actually) and I cannot stand Twilight. I have read read Twilight and I plan on reading the other three books, mainly so then I can complete my opinion of the series. So far, I agree with what I have read form the blog itself and the comments it received. I do find the book very predictable, and Bella doesn’t show any character flaws, which just shows how lazy Stephanie Meyers is and what an awful author she is. And Twilight being a better story then one of Shakespeare?! OH MY. That is the CRAZIEST thing I have ever heard. Shakespeare, his plays show true romance and his characters demonstrate realistic personalities. I don’t know what it is with my generation honestly, they gorw dumber and dumber as each day passes….
Ah! I too hate Twilight the book nor the movie. It’s not that great like other books I’ve come to read.
With all the analogies the author has to come up within the book.
And how the young girl fell in love with the vampire, as the vampire endured all the hardships that he feels whenever his near the girl…
and how Meyer describes him perfectly in the book…
flawless from everything…
I personally like the Twilight, but i do understand why you and other people would hate it. I like it because it has love and unforbidden love and their love is so strong and amazing that it makes you want to have that love. The way Stepehenie Meyer describes how Bella feels about Edward and what he makes her feel is….amazing to me because that is the love i strive for, that is the love i want.
I do understand why you hate it and i read a comment there i don’t know the name of the person that wrote it but i do get what said person means about love at first sight.
I would like if it was like any other love that they got to know eachother first and then let it see how it progressed from friendship into a beautiful, wonderful love.
I do sometimes wish that i had never read Twilight or the other 3 books because it does make you want something that you know will never happen. Stephenie has great insight on love or the feelings of love.
I’m not going to write why i think you should like it or why i think its good or anything, i would like to know more to why you don’t like it and i would like to talk to some people about why they dislike it.
But you have every right to your opinon and you have every right to dislike the book.
Nicole =]
thank you! i never hated twilight, i had just read better books. but with all the buzz my distaste turned into a disgusting dislike. i have friends who like the books, but i am really ticked off by those fans who practically belong in cults. thanks for expressing yours (and my) honest, educated OPINION!
Because, apparently, everyone who reads this has to then express their opinion – I am of the “don’t like Twilight” category, to the extend that mentioning the phrases “Twilight book/twilight series/twilight movie” around me are forbidden around me, by order of my brother.
Like many others, I don’t think they’re well-written, and the hype isn’t anything that its cracked up to be. But mostly, I hate the fact that Twilight has brutally murdered my mythology.
I love ancient history, and I researched and wrote a paper of the different vampire mythologies for collage. I love the old concept of the vampire, when they were something to be feared and would sooner tear a pretty girl’s heart out than try to win it over. Those vampires have been warped in modern literature, ever since the first Dracula movie. To me, Twilight has just ripped another layer off what I loved about vampires to make it into a schoolgirl fantasy, when making Edward (for example) an Incubi would have worked equally as well, and fit more into the original concept of that kind of monster.
Okay! Here are my two cents worth.
I didn’t particularly like the book, however i stuck to my guns to try and finish the series (i’ve got some credibility after reading it π )
The story was quite straightforward, but i found that the more i read on, the more i was annoyed with the literature. Stephenie Myer’s writing was very choppy – short sentences and her writing lacked a depth. Very teeny sort of writing, for 13 or 14 year olds, it felt like i was reading the Baby Sitters Club! Although she used an extensive vocabulary, there was no eloquence in it.
I think that the people who like this because of the romance, have not yet read the better romance novels out there. There are much much much more better Romance novels out there and it would probably diminish the way Edward Cullen is currently perceived.
Based on the way it’s written, I found Twilight seemed to believe its audience to be twits. I’ve tried to point this out in more detail (and hopefully with more humor) in a parody I wrote. Based on the feedback, both Twilight fans and haters find the parody quite funny. You can read it at:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/8796072/A-Twilight-Parody-TwiLITE
I totally agree, i hate twilight!!
I have not read any book by this author, so in good faith I can not say I liked, or disliked her work. However, I can say I am sick of the hype. Beyond that, I am pleased to see that those that did enjoy her work, where kind in how they stated their facts with out going ballistic saying βTwilight is my life!!!! I NEED Edward to breathe!!!!β Very, very happy no fan said that here.
I believe there have been good outlined points made, from the positive to the negative.
Thatβs all I wanted to say. Happy readings!! π
Edward, schmedward. Jon Bon Jovi is better! And real!
I do enjoy the Twilight series. Yeah there are better books out there, but these books are not as horrible as some people are making them out to be. Most people just don’t want to admit that they enjoy these books in fear of conforming with others. Which really doesn’t make sense. And yes, others just simply do not like them. I use to like the books a lot more when less people read them because now there are these little girls who get angry if someone disagress with them over Twilight which makes the rest of us Twilight fans look bad. When I read most of the comments on here some of the peoples reasoning for hating the book was just because they are closed minded and misunderstanding.
Anways, the books are not that bad, I just wish the HUGE Twilight fans would shut up about it for one day.
oh, kudos. i highly dislike that seiries too. i mean, its a lousy book that has no excitement whasoever, and the writing was TERRIBLE. she used the phrase, “rolled his/her eyes” a BILLION times. and its so uncreative! and the werewolf thing? wtf? she totally cut out the entire werewolf aspect at the end, making people wonder wth is a werewolf compared to a watsit guard dog. its pathetic!! sorry for my angry venting. what i hate even more is that BEFORE that book came out, I was (and still am) writing a book called strange company which includes va,mps’n’wargs, but im glad i read that series just so i wont EVER make the same mistakes she did. and the character edward isnt hot. the ACTOR WHO PLAYED HIM IN THE DAMNED MOVIE IS. even though i dont really think so… anyway, i love a good debate and hope that all u guys will stick to your opinions.
I agree with you Germonderpop, I saw the movie and though I thought it was ok, I really wasn’t impressed. Something about sparkly vampires just makes my blood boil. Vampires really should not have even been brought to the action scene, much less the romance scene. Remember when we used to kill these bastards and have nightmares about them?
I would really like to see Edward Cullen turn into Nosferatu and eat Bella Swan. We will see how hot he is then! This series makes me want to go flush the toilet! Sorry Stephanie Meyer, You’re still no J.K. Rowling! Not even close!
I hate so much twilight, stephenie mayer and edward cullen ( robert pattinson ). The book is so commercial and childish and the movie sucks.
stephanie meyers simply cannot write. she has written a train wreck of teenage angst and goth wannabe trash that has nothing to do with anything. it’s like reading a horrible fan fiction piece by a twelve year old. she doesn’t deserve the recognition for her disaster, and the disaster did not deserve any screen time. the bar for writing has been lowered drastically, and now a hundred more people are going to ride the waves of her shocking success and produce more crap.
Its not goth wannabe trash. No where in the book does it make fun of goths or mention anything about it. you people are so close minded when it comes to these books and movie. yeah the movie wasn’t the best but for real, it is A LOT better then most of the crap I’ve seen. Stephanie Meyers writes amazing books. those who hate it can’t admit to themselves that she beats most of there writting. All of you are truly pathetic. I feel sorry for you guys. You have no life.
@ Jerry
Why, because we don’t like those stupid books? I think it’s time to reevaluate who really has no life!
I read the Twilight series when it first came out. I read the book after book. I LOVED IT until it became a huge fandom. It got really annoying when everyone at school talked about 90% of them time. NO ONE SHUTS UP ABOUT IT! It isn’t real or anything and there is no such thing as an Edward. There NEVER will be. Sorry to be the pessimist but it’s true. You can find someone close to perfect but no one is perfect. Bella does get really annoying and whiny after a while. I found myself liking when Jacob would take over because he was a bit more realistic if you ask me. The Twilight fandom kinda killed the book. If those girls wouldn’t have gone totally wacko over it it wouldn’t seem as silly and stupid. I have to give Stephenie Meyer credit thought because I wouldn’t write any better. Still it isn’t epic. I LOVE TO READ ABOUT VAMPIRES. I don’t know why but they fasinate me. Twilight makes vampires seem so prissy. I mean come on! VAMPIRE DON’T FREAKIN SPARKLE!!! (If they were real I mean) Anyway Twilight isn’t that good of a book.
Thank you. Finally someone who understands. I agree with your ideaology. The books weren’t anything really special. And I don’t really like all the twi-tards out there are who are obsessed with Edward. HE’S NOT REAL! I can’t understand why everyone suddenly loves the books….
Can anybody tell me what’s up with all these fan clubs?
Thank goodness there are more of us! At school there are actually DEBATES about the characters. I don’t get why they find Edward so perfect either. I mean, he’s got yellow eyes! I wish people would hurry up and realize that the book is FICTION! I wasted half my weekend reading 3/4 of the book, and if you ask me, that book is a waste of time, apparent effort, money and paper. I used to LOVE vampires. I main thing I loved was the way they hate humans and their ways. Twilight really knocked down my love for vampires.
And when it comes to Stephanie Meyer, I think she is plain lazy. My sister is MAD about Twilight, and she told me that when she wrote Breaking Dawn, she just grabbed a bunch of fanfanis off the net and shoved them into a book. And the name Renesme is just lazy as well . How about she at least gives the baby a decent name!
And now there’s this really annoying petition going around about Meyer writing yet another book (lord help us) and how she might not write it, so people are trying to get an email petition signed to get her to write it.
BTW, someone said it was a young teens/preteens book. just telling you i’m 12, so its actually a YOUGER-THAN-PRETEENS-BOOK
@ Shelia
You talk about Meyers books and writting, look at your writting. And you are wrong about what genre it’s in, it is under young adult or older teens. She isn’t lazy with any of her books except the last one, yes was lazy of her for coming up with a mix of the two parents names. I was angry with that as well. As for her other books, I love them. I’m not one of those crazy fans that is going to tell you guys how idiotic you are for not liking them, its your own choice. BUT, I do like them. Her writting is perfect.
I agree with you Dessi.
The books are great, but there are other better books out there as well.
Vampires are not suppose to hate humans, thats a stereotype dumb people make when they read vampire books.
Dessi
Oh, and when did i say i was amazing at writing? it’s possible to say someone’s bad without saying you’re good! But i suppose if you like twilht you should read sleeping beauty! another prince charming story where all girls are pathetic and can’t do anything for themselves!
Maybe you should read a book with a larger vocabulary.
I’ve ANALYZED the problem!!!
i read all four books, and they were okay i guess, but it’s no need for the obnsession going on at the moment with all the fans. it’s just sad that our children are asking robert pattison to “bite them” if thats what our world has come to, it is very sad.
i mean when i was reading them, it was hard to wait for the next one, but not to the point were i write every where i love twilight, or even buy magazines with pictures, or see the movie serveral times.
also, another thing is that if this blog was about, lets say for an example, people obsessing over twenty-seven dresses, there wouldn’t be half this comments, because people scavenge everywhere to find anything possible about twilight they can. and also as you said before, to abuse people for not liking it.
why can’t people just accept the fact that some peoples brains work normally and aren’t obsessed with something that could easily be done for example..
describe some characters a beautiful, put in some cute quotes, and then put in a simple twist, and there you have it, a international best seller.
um. no.
Oh, thank goodness. Sane people. I found the characters in the Twilight saga hideously undeveloped, which leads to a reader being unsatisfied by them. I was particulary disappointed with the character of Esme Cullen-she was intruiging to me, I wanted to know more about her-but Stephenie Meyer explanied next to nothing on this character-maybe too busy writing Edward’s puke-worthy, sappy declarations of love (“You are the one who has touched my heart. Sleep, my only love.” YUCK.) I only characters I found interesting where Jacob Black, Rosalie Hale, and Leah Clearwater. Seth was sweet and cute, but had no depth which made him as a character fall flat. At least Rosalie and Leah have stories behind them-and Jake is able to relate to the audience. Which was my problem with Bella-when she was human, she was annoying, pathetic, selfish, and whiny. But when she was finally granted her wish of “eternal damnation”, I hated her even more. The first thing she comments on is how “OMG HOW TOTALLY BEAUTIFUL SHE IS”…and then, of course, the mention of Edward’s beauty that we are never able to escape. Bella becomes egotistical and loses all connection with the readers. I’m not even going to talk about Renesmee. Three words for you: Creepy, Wrong, and Disturbing. Ok, done with my rant.
Even though it can be nasty and annoying, especially the second book “New Moon” it can be interesting. and you have to admit that robert Pattinson is at least a little bit cute. Maybe a tiny bit. I mean if you don’t like him because he is in twilight, like him because he is in harry potter 4
Hahahaha, I hate Twilight too!
It is so nice to meet someone who isn’t completely obsessed with that book, and god forbid the movie which sucked and made me wanna seriously injure
I mean they were both equally awful with their same transparent characters who aren’t even even very attractive, the creepy, almost bondage-like relationships and the blood-sucking pixies that Stephanie Myer so desperately tried and succeeded to portray as cool.
Honestly, I have no idea in HELL what people thought was so damn cool about it.
Especially all the people who are all like “OMG EDWARD IS SO HAWTTT!!!I WANT TO HAV HIS VAMP BABIEZZ!!”
Oh my god NOBODY CARES!!!
Seriously, and I can’t believe I am encouraging this but it’s goten way out of control, dump your annoying and dilluded fantasies about a BOOK CHARACTER and go obssess over somebody real like, heaven forbid, The Jonas Brothers or something.
Twilight is irresponsible!!
With the growing number of copies sold and the newly produced movie based on the book, the Twilight series has stirred up the literature world and entertainment circle with its popularity and fame. So much applauding and cheering heard, has anyone ever pondered on the negative effect the Twilight series may have on our young generations β the future of tomorrowβs world? Has anyone ever questioned our media on where it is leading our young adults to?
As an ordinary mom of a twelve year old daughter, I am very concerned and astonished by the fact that the Twilight series have been promoted among and embraced by young girls with a wide age range from under 10 to up to 20. Even though the author is very effective in setting the story plot and suspense (the whole story is full of rises and falls, enticing readers to continue), I feel it is very much lack of literature beauty. If you look at all the descriptions of the main character, vampire Edward Cullen, itβs basically a pile of pretty words used repetitively. The author simply strings together ornate phrases to promote a so called beautiful image. Even my twelve year old daughter thinks the author is lack of vocabulary in this aspect. And I also think itβs bizarre and offensive to describe a vampire as βgodlyβ and βangle-likeβ. Not to offend the actor in the movie, but the image of Edward portrayed on the screen β the icy cold and deadly look, the gloomy and shadowy face, etc. β is definitely not the kind of uplifting and bright model we want our young adults imitate and follow. Unfortunately, our media has lured our young people into believing this is called βcool and attractive.β
The lack of literature beauty is also shown in the fact that the books merely use intensive descriptions to stimulate readersβ senses and imagination of possible sexual sensations. Young readers are crazy about this so called βloveβ story, where as it is not love at all. An analytical look at the two main characters easily tells that it is more of pornographic desire, lust, even though sex is not explicitly and directly depicted. Edward is originally attracted to Bella by her blood, a pure animal attraction. Later, without any foundation, he βfell in loveβ with her β was it her appearance? We donβt know. The author intends to promote him as a heroic character by describing how hard he tries to refrain him from having sex with Bella. But he controls his desire because he is afraid he ends up tearing Bella apart and eating her flesh and blood. There is no moral lesson taught here. A look at Bella, she is much worse a character for our young adult readers. She is drawn to Edward by his appearance — telling people outside appearance is more than inside beauty; she does not care that they are not the common type, even when it means forbidden, dangerous, and dark relationship. Is this something we want to teach our children about love? She looks up to Edward in a way that makes herself inferior (he is godly, angel-like, so beautifulβ¦) and she can barely control herself from having sex with Edward — totally lack of self confidence and lack of self respect, and a victim of lust for pornography. If the Twilight series is trying to tell a love story, it is a VERY UNHEALTHY and dark love relationship, let alone to speak about the later development of a triangle love relation involving vampire, werewolf and human. Unfortunately, young adult readers, especially pre-teens, still have a difficult time separating real life from fantasies, and can easily accept the wrong messages and/or subconsciously follow the wrong models from this book series and the movie.
I give a thumb up to those publishers who have rejected this book, as some of them must have thought about the moral responsibility they shoulder. Our media is a very important educational tool for the mass population, especially our young people who are the future of our world. You are responsible for shaping the future of our world by influencing our children today! It is shocking to see that the Twilight book series have been translated into so many languages and are gaining world-wide attention among young readers, this can only mean one thing: our world is sick! It is the media that can spread the disease or cure the disease. And this is the reason that I would like to share my concerns and my voice, and hope my sharing can raise attention and concerns for our children.
Hi, i dont hate twilight but i dont like it either. Like someone says, the characters are so perfect and not just them but the situations too. Everyboy loves the girl, a father who doesnt give a damn about what her daughter is doing,a vampire that sparkles??… anyway…i know the millions of millions of fans around the world could say this movie is the best ever… but come on!! you have to recognized that this is all about bussines and if Stephanie Meyer gives her permission ( and im pretty sure that it can happen) very soon we will be eating TWILIGHT SOUP!
I dont own a blog but i know how you feel.
I know this because everytime one of the preps marchs up to me and asks me if i like twilight i simply just say no. The thing is they run back to their posse and tell them all about me. Sometimes i end up like how you described “made me want to do something violent”, but most of the time i just end up forgetting all about them and going back to being happy
Ha-ha, agreeing with you again. π
i think you have a right to dislike any of steph’s work, but i belive her twilight seires are out of this world! and its not even robert patterson (even though he is quite hot!) that draws you in its the romance and intencaty of the situations, i didnt read mutch until i started thease books, and by chapter two i was hooked, and hooked i stayed until i finished all four books, the film is nothing compared but is good all the same, i wish i could understand why you dont like it?
i never enjoyed the twilight series. bella swan is too much of a mary sue character, and edward cullen has no character AT ALL.( personally im a bigger anime fan go ed elric!
I enjoyed the Twilight Series a little, but then there are reasons why it wasn’t as good as I was hoping for.
1. The vampires SPARKLE! I was just like WTF! In the movie and the book, Bella described it as “beautiful”, but when I saw the part where Edward takes off his shirt to show Bella why he can’t go out into the sunlight, I said, “OMG! Why is there a disco ball in the movie?” If you don’t get it then the Cullens and disco balls sparkle. Great comparison, isn’t it?
2. During the whole movie and book, Bella was like,”OMG!OMG! Don’t leave me Edward! I know you could kill me so stay away from me but don’t leave me!” And since when does that make any sense? She didn’t want Edward to kill her, but at the same time, she didn’t want Edward to leave. It didn’t make any sense!
3. The movie was O.K., but it would have been better if Kristen Stewert didn’t play Bella. I want to be nice about this so I am going to word it as nice as possible……….Kristen Stewert is a wart-looking, mud eating, fat headed, no brained peice of crap who tries to trick people into thinking she is good at acting when in reality, she and everyone around her knows she sucks at it. She never showed any emotion and she acted like she couldn’t even remember her lines because whenever she talked, she was talking really slow and she studders all the time.
4. I personally think it would be creepy having Edward following me around all the time like my own personal stalker. Always asking me every single detail about what has happened to me in my past, always watching me sleep after climbing up the side of my house and sneaking through my window, always watching me wherever I am because I might get hurt and he will want to save me.
5. The last reason, what’s up with Edward having sex with Bella? He knew it could have killed her and I wouldn’t care if it was a promise or not. I would have waited until she was a vampire. He knew she could have died but she risked her life any anyway. He always talks about how much he loves her but then he goes off to risk her life! I would never want a boyfriend like that that is always talking about how much he loves me and then going off to risk my life knowing that there is a huge risk that he is going to kill me.
Oh and just for the record, just because I am not a huge addict of Twilight, I think Harry Potter sucks balls and will never be that good and Robert Pattinson sucks at acting but he is still hooooooot!!
Never read the book or saw the movie, never will. Hate vampires, werewolves and romance. That is all.
I havent read Twilight so i probably shouldnt even be saying anything but i dont care. Im sick of people talking about it. i mean i dont completely hate people who love it it just gets annoying at times. I dont like how the vampires sparkle. I guess im more into the classic vampires.I love vampires and these books just ruined the idea of the classic ones. I guess since they’re not even real it wouldnt matter what you made of them. Just my opinion that the “real” ones are better. And i have no idea why everyone is drooling over Robert Pattinson. Blehh. I dont get it.
check out the video on my homepage and see how I make fun of twilight.
Hi, i believe that i noticed you visited my website so i came to Γ’β¬Εgo back the preferΓ’β¬Β.I’m attempting to to find things to improve my website!I guess its ok to use a few of your ideas!!
